Meaning

1. Overdramatic or excessive, beyond what a situation calls for.
2. Dressed or styled more elaborately than necessary.

Where it came from

Extra has meant “more than needed” for centuries. Black American slang repurposed it in the 2000s and 2010s as a standalone put-down for someone being dramatic, and it spread through Vine and Twitter before settling into everyday use.
