Where it came from

Muhammad Ali called himself “The Greatest” after beating Sonny Liston in 1964. His wife is credited with turning the nickname into the acronym G.O.A.T. in the 1990s, and sports debate culture carried it into everyday slang through the 2000s and 2010s.
