Where it came from
The phrase grew out of Black and LGBTQ+ internet culture, building on the plain classroom meaning of grasping a task. A March 2021 tweet pairing four Uma Thurman photos with the caption spread the format widely, and TikTok’s use of Tay Money’s song “The Assignment” that same year cemented it.
